Part 2: Shadows of Motives

The police cordoned off Tunde’s mansion, now a crime scene bathed in the harsh glow of floodlights. Detective Aisha Bello, a no-nonsense investigator with a knack for reading people, took charge. She gathered the four key suspects—Kemi, Chinedu, Amara, and Malik—in the living room, their faces a mix of shock, fear, and defiance. The guests had been sent home, but these four were told to stay. Aisha’s sharp eyes scanned them as she began piecing together the night.

Kemi, Tunde’s best friend, sat with her arms crossed, her lawyerly composure barely masking her grief. She said she’d been by the pool, arguing with a drunk guest about politics, when the scream rang out. But a waiter recalled seeing her slip into the hallway near the study just minutes before. Kemi and Tunde had been inseparable, but whispers of a recent falling-out over a loan she’d asked him for surfaced. Had her pride turned deadly?

Chinedu, the business partner, paced nervously, his expensive watch glinting. He claimed he was in the kitchen, checking on the caterers, at the time of the murder. Yet a guest swore they saw him storm out of the study earlier, muttering angrily. Chinedu’s stake in Tunde’s startup was lucrative, but Tunde’s recent talk of selling the company threatened his fortune. Was greed his motive?

Amara, the ex-girlfriend, sat quietly, her eyes red but dry. She admitted to a heated exchange with Tunde near the bar about their messy breakup six months ago. Tunde had moved on too quickly, she said, but she insisted she was in the bathroom when he died. A friend, however, mentioned Amara’s obsession with Tunde’s new girlfriend, who hadn’t attended the party. Could jealousy have driven her to kill?

Malik, the caterer, was the enigma. He spoke little, saying he was busy serving food all night. But a guest recalled him lingering near the study, looking agitated. Malik had worked for Tunde for years, but rumors swirled that Tunde had humiliated him over a botched event, threatening to ruin his small business. Was revenge his reason?

Aisha found no clear evidence yet—no fingerprints, no witnesses to the act itself. The knife, a common kitchen tool, offered no clues. As she dismissed the suspects for the night, she knew the truth lay in their secrets. Tomorrow, she’d dig deeper.
