Shadow Thief

“Ole!”

“Thief!”

Ẹyin ará ilé, ẹ gbà mí mu oo!

Wéré ni ọmọ yẹn!

Ó ti jí ìfẹ́ mi, ó sì tún wá bá ọkàn mi.

That boy is a killer!

A murderer!

He has stolen something from me.

Gather around, don’t go yet!

Let me tell you a story of how my heart was sold without my presence.

The boy came like a shadow, silent and quick. I knew he was there, but I never paid him any mind.

Sometimes I would twirl and try to get a glimpse, but like a shadow, he would always evade my gaze.

I hope I still have your ear.

With time, somehow, I got used to him. I didn’t know him yet, but his presence had come to stay. He was there, unharming, safe, and true.

Soon he took a step and came into my view. I took a step back, and he did the same. But my body was too comfortable, and the <del>man</del> shadow had slowly stolen my love for silence, and my love for being alone.

Then one day, I came to find that he wasn’t a shadow anymore. He was around me and within me. He occupied my every thought. The thief had struck again—see him as he runs with my mind, watch him go with my peace.

Little by little, he stole and stole. Little by little, everything I had became his.

It comes as no surprise that today I came to find something red and beating in his hands.
