THE SMILE OF TODAY, THE TEARS OF TOMORROW

Today, smiles sit easily on our faces.

They wear no weight.

They dance like sunlight on a clear river.

But elders say, the river that laughs today may drown a man tomorrow.

We smile at borrowed joy.

We smile at shortcuts dressed as success.

We smile at applause that has no roots.

Like flowers cut from the stem, the beauty is loud but the life is short.

Aristotle once said, “Happiness depends upon ourselves.”

Yet many trade character for comfort.

They sell tomorrow for the pleasure of now.

Today’s smile is sweet like honey on the tongue.

But tomorrow’s tears are bitter like kola nut after regret.

As the adage goes, what you refuse to face in daylight will visit you at night.

We laugh at warnings.

We joke with discipline.

We clap for ease and mock patience.

But life keeps records.

Life never forgets.

Plato warned, “Good actions give strength to ourselves and inspire good actions in others.”

Still, many choose the smile that costs nothing

and avoid the work that builds something.

The smile of today is often painted.

Painted with filters.

Painted with lies.

Painted with noise.

But tears of tomorrow wash off every color.

An old saying reminds us, the child who refuses advice follows sorrow as a companion.

Tomorrow does not shout.

Tomorrow whispers.

It arrives quietly with consequences in its hands.

It collects unpaid debts from careless joy.

Confucius said, “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”

We complicate it by laughing where we should learn.

We complicate it by smiling where we should reflect.

Today, smile if it is earned.

Smile if it is clean.

Smile if it can stand in front of tomorrow without shame.

Because the smile of today, when built on wisdom,

will not become the tears of tomorrow.
