On my way home one Friday afternoon, something as simple as an old man’s smile completely turned my day around.

It had been a busy morning. I rushed through several chores; sweeping, rearranging the room, washing plates, and doing laundry, all while trying to beat time so I wouldn’t miss the last bus at the park. By the time I finally ate and left the house, it was almost noon. Living on the top floor of a five-storey building didn’t make things easier; climbing those endless stairs was always a test of my patience and strength. I was drained, frustrated, and weighed down with thoughts of how best to stretch the little money I had for transport while still saving a small amount for myself. Dragging along a portable travelling bag, the one I usually carry whenever I plan to stay home for only a short while, I made my way to the park.

As I walked, my face carried the heaviness of my mood, and anyone could tell how frustrated I was. Then I saw an elderly man approaching under the scorching sun. His bent frame told a story of years of hard labour, yet what drew my attention wasn’t his posture but the cheerful smile he wore. It wasn’t the usual weary, indifferent, or grumpy look that men his age often carry. His smile was different; genuine, carefree, and captivating.

He kept smiling as he drew closer, fixing his gaze on me without wavering. His joy seemed contagious, and though I tried to hold on to my frustrated look, I couldn’t resist it any longer. I smiled back! Who would have thought that something as simple as a smile could change my day? In that moment, I marvelled at how well he managed to radiate such joy on a hot, tiring day. It made me realize how quickly I let small discomforts steal my happiness, while this man, despite carrying heavier burdens than I could imagine, chose to smile.

From that encounter until I reached my destination, my mood felt lighter. The weight of the morning’s stress lifted, and I was reminded of a simple truth: Smiles are Powerful. That day, I made a vow; not just to smile, but to always find reasons to be happy, even in moments of discomfort.

Lessons from the Encounter

1. Choose to smile no matter what. No matter how bad your day gets, always find a reason to smile. Everyone has struggles, but how you handle yours shapes the outcome.

2. Encourage those around you. A kind word, a small compliment, or even a smile can brighten someone’s day more than you realize.

3. Receive kindness with gratitude. Don’t reject compliments, even from strangers. When you don’t know how to respond, a polite smile, nod, or simple “thank you” is enough.

4. Be intentional about spreading joy. Make it a daily challenge to put a smile on someone’s face; compliment small efforts, start conversations, and stay open to new connections.

5. Smiling makes you approachable. Wearing a smile naturally attracts people to you and makes you more likable.

Monthly Score
The Top Monthly Contributors ranking is a monthly metric indicating how users respond to your posts, not just how many you publish.
We look at three main things:
1
How strong your best post is —
Your highest-scoring post this month carries the most weight. One great post can take you far.
2
How consistent the engagement you receive is —
We also look at the average score of all your posts. If your work keeps getting good reactions, you get a boost.
3
How consistent the engagement you receive is —
Posting more helps — but only a little.
Extra posts give a small bonus that grows slowly, so quality always matters more than quantity.
In simple terms:
A great post beats many ignored posts
Consistently engaging posts beat one lucky hit
Spamming low-engagement posts won't help
Tips, comments, and upvotes from others matter most
This ranking is designed to reward
Thoughtful, high-quality posts
Real engagement from the community
Consistency over time — without punishing you for posting again
The Top Monthly Contributors leaderboard reflects what truly resonates, not just who posts the most.
