THE PAST AND PRESENT CONUNDRUM

I was speaking with a friend on a WhatsApp call, couple of weeks back. During the course of our conversation, she asked me a question; if I had the option of going back to the past to correct mistakes, or going forward to the future to get a glimpse of what lies ahead, what would I choose? Without thinking I chose to go to the past to correct mistakes. As living in the present, would give me certain insights to things I could have done differently. This was also her choice - it seems like that was what most people likely went for. Then, as usual, I really thought about it. Is that really the better option? I realized that everything that happened in the past led to where I am presently. And sure, I may think if they happened differently, then my present would have been better than it is. But, it is always easy to think that the road not taken would lead to a better destination. We are guilty of this, we often believe that if we did things differently, we would get a better result. We often nurse regrets and the thoughts of 'had I known'. What never happen is always imagined to be better. However, if we go back to the past to correct 'mistakes', there's no guarantee that our present would be more pleasant. And speaking of mistakes, what is life without mistakes? They are part of what makes us who we are. Nobody has done life before, so is it really a bad thing if we make mistakes. We dwell on these mistakes, and in the process impede ourselves from personal growth. Sure, there are things that could have been done better. Rather than beat ourselves up, why don't we learn and grow from it. Moreover, a visit to the past automatically changes the present. The present as we know it, isn't the same anymore. So what you think you might be improving upon, may not even exist anymore. Forgive me for going sci fi with this. It can get crazy. My advice, is that we enjoy and make the most of our time. And try as much as we can, to shake off regrets from the past.
