The Cane of Judgement

You hate Mr. Ade.

He’s cruel, impatient, and gross. He can barely teach, and his posture is like that of the blackboard—bent, stiff, and pitiful.

But something is worse than Mr. Ade and his nasty attitude: the cane he carries. The Cane of Judgement, the students call it. To you, it’s worse. It’s your mortal enemy.

You’re usually a good student, a teacher’s pet even. But the day the cane gave your crush, Adaobi, thirty-three strokes for chewing gum, you knew something had to be done. You were furious. You eyed the cane with unveiled, hot rage. And somehow, it knew.

From that moment, it turned on you. It judged everything. Your hair was too long. You sighed. You were twentyseconds late. For each "offense," it called out punishments in that scratchy, evil voice. Mr. Ade didn’t question it, he just obeyed, lifting the cane and striking your body like he was possessed.

You stayed silent. You bore it. But you made one mistake. You started fantasizing, imagining the cane breaking in half, splinters on the floor, silence at last. That was when it smiled. You swear it did. A line in the grain near the handle curled upward like a lip. You blinked.

Then the voice came again, dry and smug. “Ten strokes for unholy thoughts.” Your head snapped up. “But I didn’t even say anything!” The cane laughed. It laughed. “Thought crime,” it whispered. Mr. Ade nodded.

The first stroke landed before you could run.
