The August Visitor that Never Came
<p>In the heat of August,</p><p>Lagos wore her restless face,</p><p>danfo horns in chorus,</p><p>okada men in a speed-run race.</p><p><br/></p><p>But I was not chasing bus or fame,</p><p>I was waiting for a queen to claim;</p><p>the right woman, promised flame,</p><p>my August Visitor who never came.</p><p><br/></p><p>I kept the compound, neat and clear,</p><p>as if her footsteps were drawing near.</p><p>I polished my plates till they caught the light,</p><p>set two cups for tea, just in case tonight.</p><p><br/></p><p>Neighbors mocked: “<em>Bachelor dey form groom?”</em></p><p>But I filled my room with the scent of perfume.</p><p>I prayed NEPA for light that would not fade,</p><p>even bribed the gateman with Fanta I paid.</p><p><br/></p><p>I rehearsed my vows before the mirror,</p><p>hoping love would end this bachelor’s terror.</p><p>I told my heart: “<em>Hold on, don’t blame,</em></p><p><em>the August Visitor will surely came</em>.”</p><p><br/></p><p>But rain fell heavy, flooding the lane,</p><p>gutters overflowed, but she came not again.</p><p>Thunder cracked jokes with no reply,</p><p>and every cloud whispered another lie.</p><p><br/></p><p>August danced with empty skies,</p><p>while I stared with longing eyes.</p><p>The gate stayed quiet, no knock, no flame,</p><p>only the echo of her missing name.</p><p><br/></p><p>Now the boys at the junction tease:</p><p>“<em>Chairman, your wife dey come by breeze?”</em></p><p>And I just laugh to hide the shame,</p><p>pretend it’s all one playful game.</p><p><br/></p><p>But deep inside, my hope won’t drag;</p><p>though August is almost packing its bag.</p><p>I will still wait, and I won’t surrender,</p><p>for August is not yet over…</p><p>my August Visitor might still come before September.</p>
