Sex and Shame.

Tayo sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the rumpled sheets. Only hours ago, this same bed had burned with a fire she had never known before. Her legs still trembled at the memory.

Kunle had moved slowly, deliberately, trailing the soft feather across her skin while she lay bound gently to the headboard, blindfolded, every nerve alive and throbbing. She had begged. She had cried out. And for the first time in their marriage, she had not been pretending. Her body had answered with a release so intense it left her shaking long after he untied her.

She remembered how it all began. Kunle had been shy, almost hesitant, when he first brought it up. “I want us to enjoy each other more,” he had said quietly. “Not just for me, for you too. You can say no anytime.”

Tayo had nodded quickly, playing the role of the good wife. But deep down, a secret curiosity had stirred. As a teenager she had secretly read stories on Wattpad, Ao3, watched Fifty Shades of Grey in hidden tabs, and seen things she knew good Christian girls weren’t supposed to see. Knowing about those things was one thing. Doing them with her own husband felt dangerously different.

That had they started small, soft handcuffs and whispered check-ins. Evening after evening, they grew bolder. Tayo even found herself researching the next items online, her heart racing as she added them to Kunle’s cart. Since that first night, she had not faked a single orgasm. For the first time, sex felt real. Fun. Alive.

But now, sitting alone in the quiet room, guilt crashed over her like cold water.

This morning at church, Pastor had thundered from the pulpit about the devil’s clever traps in marriage. “Brethren, the enemy is entering our bedrooms!” he had shouted. “Temptations of fornication, unnatural acts, toys and gadgets that God never put in the marriage bed. Why should your wife’s body not be enough for you? Everything you need, the Lord has given naturally!”

The congregation had laughed loudly at the last line. Tayo and Kunle had forced awkward smiles, joining in so no one would suspect. But inside, Tayo had felt her stomach twist.

Now the words echoed in her head: Unnatural. Sin. Devil’s trap.

She pressed her palms together, whispering a frantic prayer under her breath. “God, forgive me. Forgive us. We are sinning… aren’t we?”

Yet even as she prayed, her body still hummed with the memory of Kunle’s focused attention, the way he had watched her reactions, the way he had asked again and again if she was okay, if she wanted more. For the first time, he wasn’t just performing a marital duty. He was present. He was enjoying her, and she was enjoying him.

Tayo buried her face in her hands.

She had always been the good wife. The one who never complained. The one who endured. But now something had awakened in her, something that felt dangerously close to pleasure instead of obligation. And the worst part? She didn’t want to go back to the way things were before.

How could something that made her so happy… be sin?
