Pursuit of (un)happiness
The need and pursuit for happiness is what too many people feel is the reason for life. I agree that a lot of what we do is motivated by this. But what happens when that's the sole purpose for living? Happiness is important to us as humans, especially in this cynic and messed up world. But if all we strive for is to be happy, then there might be a growing problem. When your entire reason for being is hinged on being happy, you create more room for you to be unhappy (I really hope this makes sense 😂). Think about it; happiness is fleeting and irregular. It could last a moment, and may be a while before it comes back. What then happens to us during the period of its absence? We might feel like life is meaningless and empty at that point. A man who knows that his entire being isn't hinged on happiness, would probably find it easier to get through difficult times. This is because he is aware that there are other factors which are equally important. Contentment, patience and the ability to 'enjoy' suffering, are some of them. When we are in constant pursuit of happiness, we are insatiable. Because the things that make us happy are ever changing, and we probably wouldn't get them all. Do you think it is the acquisition of money that determines happiness? What happens when you find out that the money you acquire is never enough. At this point what is needed, is contentment. A lot of our sadness may ironically be from our incessant pursuit of happiness when you think about it. You spend so much time trying to be happy, and when you do not achieve that which you believe would make you happy; you slip into sadness. You might think brooding people are cynics, who see no reason to be happy. But in actuality, they are people who constantly feel happiness eludes them. Let us for a change, learn to appreciate the periods of difficulties. Like I read somewhere, 'we have to embrace suffering, if we are to experience growth'. While the pursuit of happiness is necessary, we should be well informed that it is a tricky journey.
