Propaganda I'm Not Falling For: School is a Scam

Welcome back to my series on the "propaganda" I’m just not buying into. Today, I'm tackling a popular, often provocative, statement that circulates widely, especially among younger generations and online entrepreneurs: the idea that "school is a scam."

This propaganda usually stems from a valid critique of traditional education's shortcomings—its high costs, sometimes outdated curricula, and the undeniable success stories of individuals who dropped out to build empires. The message often suggests that formal education is a waste of time and money, a rigid system designed to funnel you into a cubicle, rather than fostering true innovation or wealth creation. It promotes the idea that "street smarts" or self-taught skills are inherently superior, and that institutions are actively holding you back from your potential.

I'm not falling for it. While I agree that education systems need constant reform and innovation, dismissing "school" entirely as a scam is a dangerous oversimplification. Formal education offers far more than just a degree. It provides a structured environment for critical thinking, problem-solving, and disciplined learning. It exposes you to diverse perspectives, broadens your worldview, and often equips you with foundational knowledge that is difficult to replicate through self-study alone. Beyond academics, school teaches invaluable soft skills: collaboration, communication, time management, and resilience in the face of academic pressure. It also offers networking opportunities and a credible pathway into many professions that still require specific certifications and qualifications.

While not every path requires a traditional degree, and many successful people forge their own way, painting the entire system as a "scam" undermines the immense value it provides to millions. It's propaganda that can lead people to prematurely abandon a valuable avenue for growth and development, all for the allure of a perceived shortcut. The truth is, "school" is a tool, and like any tool, its value depends on how you wield it.
