NEW ME

Every year we have this thing we do, “New year, new me.”

I’m not going to repeat last year’s mistakes.

We make all sorts of plans, bold promises to ourselves, carefully written goals.

But what if we aren’t able to meet up with those plans?

What if we plan with all our hearts, yet execution slips through our fingers?

Sometimes it isn’t laziness or lack of will sometimes life simply happens.

Things beyond our control show up uninvited and rearrange our timelines.

I think about my friend.

He had plans too. Real ones. Hope-filled ones.

A year mapped out with dreams, effort, and the quiet belief that things would finally work out.

But somewhere along the line, life took a cruel turn.

Instead of chasing his goals, he ended up behind bars for something he didn’t do.

Tell me, how do you plan for that?

How do you prepare for injustice, for being punished by circumstances you never created?

One moment you’re dreaming, the next you’re just trying to survive a reality you never imagined.

And that’s when I realized....

Not everyone who didn’t “make it” failed.

Some people were simply overpowered by situations bigger than them.

So maybe this year isn’t about becoming a new me.

Maybe it’s about understanding that life doesn’t always play fair.

That sometimes, the bravest thing isn’t winning but enduring.

If I don’t achieve everything I planned this year,

I hope I at least keep my compassion.

For myself. For my friend. For everyone quietly fighting battles the world knows nothing about.

Because growth isn’t always visible.

And survival, too, is a kind of victory.
