IN THE WAKE OF SIRENS: WHEN JOY AND SORROW COLLIDE

‎Its Sunday afternoon. The scorching sun, sounds of car horns, angry pedestrians, hawkers and motorcyclists all on the street of Abuja.

‎

‎Terror in the eyes accompanied by fear as an accident-victim relative, stood fidgeting, with darting eyes as if crying for help. An accident had just occured!

‎ Two cars were smashed by some impatient reckless trailer drivers maybe in haste to escape the draining traffic.

‎‎Hunger welled up in stomachs as you could hear rumblings. Eyes sunken like beggars on the street.

‎Thirst.

‎ Hunger.

Anger.

‎Frustration.

‎Held up in what seemed like eternity, cars moved in relief and rush to escape the traffic but not so fast. Patience, patience! Patience called out as another seemingly everlasting suffering emerged- another traffic and an unforseen event; another accident.

Crowds were gathered like shadows drawn to flickering light. Their eyes fixated on the chaotic scene. Some to steal, some to assimilate what was happening, some, victims of the unfortunate situation. What a devastating tragedy!

‎

‎But life goes on. The seemingly everlasting suffering finally seemed to disappear...slowly, slowly and slowly. You could hear sighs of relief, laughter and voices loud again. How refreshing it is to be free!

‎

‎Its a refreshing time for some- free from the draining traffic but a mournful state for others; victims of the accident and relatives of the victims. What a contradicting way of life, where relief and sorrow share the same road.

‎"Ohh how I wish I could foresee! How I wish the power to rewrite fate was in my hands!"

‎

‎But life is unfair. Life has never been fair to anyone. Should we live with our fate or it can be rewritten?

‎

‎I sat down with my pen in hand as I reflected over what happened. Life is so unfair! Who do we blame? The people who give life meaning or the reckless drivers who become menaces on our roads, endangering everyone?

‎

‎I came to a conclusion that offenders must be legally punished. Not about receiving of tips and letting loose these scourges; a dire punishment. Confiscation of vehicles or revocation of licenses will serve as a warning to all drivers.

‎

‎Rip to the accident victims🥲
