FIVE VOICES ON AI

The creator of human beings is God, and for people of faith, our manual is scripture. To understand the ways of your creator, you study the guidance given to you.

In the same way, the “manual” of artificial intelligence is found in the minds of its creators the engineers, researchers, and thinkers who build it. To understand where AI is going, we must listen to what they say about it and study the ideas they leave behind so we can better understand the future it is shaping.

In this essay, I will quote the words of four globally recognized artificial intelligence creators, thinkers, and one journalist to explore the future of AI and what it means for African workers in the digital economy.

To begin with is the Godfather of AI, Geoffrey Hinton. In an interview when he was asked if he had thought about what superintelligence, which is far more advanced than AI, would mean for future generations, he said:

“I have not come in terms with what the development of AI will do to my children's future. I am okay. I am 77 and I am going to be out of here soon, but for my children and their children and my younger friends, my nephews and nieces, I just don’t like to think about what could happen because it could be awful, the super intelligence might take over humanity. I don’t know if what we are doing makes sense. The risk of having unemployed people will be there because what they used to do is now done faster and better by AI.”

Moving on, the second artificial intelligence creator responding to this future question, where lives and careers are involved, is Elon Musk.

He was asked, “What do you think about advising your children on a career with so much that is changing? What do you tell them that is going to be of value to them?”

He kept quiet for 9 seconds and said:

“Well, this is a tough question to answer, but I would say they should follow their heart and find something interesting to do and fulfilling. If I think about it too hard, it can be dispiriting and demotivating because I put a lot of sweat and blood into doing these things. If I am sacrificing time with friends and family that I would prefer, but then AI can do all these things? I don’t even know if it makes sense, but I will just tell them to work on things that they find interesting and fulfilling and that contribute to society.”

In addition, the third artificial intelligence creator and safety lecturer is Roman Yampolskiy, an associate professor.

He explained in his interview on The Diary of a CEO YouTube channel:

“In two years, the capability to replace most humans in most occupations will come very quickly.”

“In five years, we will be looking at a world where we have levels of unemployment we have not seen before, not 10%, but 99%, without the superior version of artificial intelligence, which is superintelligence, a system smarter than all humans in all domains.”

He added that it would be better to create new AI systems more carefully, but it is difficult because we still do not fully understand how to make them safe.

In addition, the fourth artificial intelligence thinker is Mo Gawdat, a former Chief Business Officer at Google X and a well-known writer and speaker on artificial intelligence, happiness, and the future of humanity.

In his reflections on artificial intelligence and the future of work, he said:

“Artificial intelligence will outperform humans in many tasks, both simple and complex, and this will significantly reduce the need for human labour in many industries.”

He also warned that:

“This shift will not only affect jobs, but also how humans find purpose, as work has long been tied to identity and survival.”

He further emphasized that:

“The real challenge is not the technology itself, but how humanity chooses to adapt to it.”

He also said in an interview on the Silicon Valley Girl YouTube channel:

“We are about to enter something I call 12 to 15 years of hell before heaven, possibly starting from 2027.”

“What will happen is what I refer to as FACE RIP.”

F Freedom

A Accountability

C Connection

E Economics

R Reality

I Innovation and Intelligence

P Power

He continued:

“Intelligence will take away jobs because every job that AI does better will be handed over to AI. People will be out of jobs. 10%, 20%, 30% of certain sectors will see unemployment in the next few years. When that happens, economics at large will change massively.

It comes a time where survival becomes an obligation, not a desire.”

Then finally, we have some Nigerians who argue that all you need to do is learn how AI works in order to remain active in the digital era.

AI should become something taught in primary schools, said Omoleye Omoruyi, a journalist, storyteller, and tech reporter.

He also suggests that universities should adopt stronger comparisons with countries like China, where children are introduced early to practical and technical skills at a young stage of learning.

My final submission is this:

With or without AI, the African future remains as bright as ever, and Africans will survive. However, inequality will still exist: the rich who dominate with AI, the average users of AI tools, and the poor and illiterate who risk being left behind.

This is the new digital divide of our time. Not just access to technology, but access to understanding, education, and opportunity.

People will survive by learning to build artificial intelligence themselves, instead of only using it. By creating AI systems that solve problems people need two or three times a day, they will not only remain relevant but also create wealth and opportunity. This is the future for them
