DRUG NOMENCLATURE

One drug, three names?.... Why does Paracetamol suddenly become Acetaminophen in another country, and why do brands like Panadol or Tylenol all contain the same thing?

Today, you’ll learn exactly why drugs have multiple names and how to identify what really matters as a pharmacology student.

Drug nomenclature simply means the systematic naming of pharmaceutical drugs.

Every drug has several names, but they all refer to the same substance.

In pharmacology, understanding drug names prevents confusion and helps you recognize the same drug even when it appears under multiple labels.

MAJOR NAMES OF A DRUG

Drug nomenclature is built around three essential names which are:

1. Chemical name or Molecular name or Scientific name.

2. Generic name or Non-proprietary name or Approved name.

3. Brand name or Proprietary name or Trade name.

The chemical name describes the molecular structure of the drug. Example is N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetamide, which is the chemical name of Paracetamol. The name is mostly used by chemists and researchers.

The generic name is the official, universally accepted name assigned by an international body. Examples are Paracetamol, amoxicillin, ibuprofen, and many more. The name can be used by anyone.

The brand name is the copyrighted name given by pharmaceutical companies for marketing. Example are Tylenol, Panadol, and Calpol, which are the brand name of Paracetamol.

WHY DRUG NOMENCLATURE MATTERS

• To avoid medication errors

• To recognize the same drug across different countries.

• To understand drug classes by name patterns.

To avoid confusion, always remember that the chemical name is the long scientific name, the generic name is the drug real name, and the brand name is the marketing name.

If you found this helpful, kindly FOLLOW for more Pharmacology topics.
