Did you know that every worker has the right to refuse work if it is truly unsafe, and not be punished ? Except in military work! Nigeria and many other countries is a member of the International labor organization ILO. The International Labour Organization (ILO) laws and conventions are intended to guide all countries in the promotion of workplace safety and in managing occupational health and safety programs. The safety legislation of 1974 which Nigeria ratified is as follows. 1. Every workplace must be healthy and safe for workers. 2. Major injuries at workplace must be reported within 24hours depending on the severity 3. Every workplace with up to 5 and above must have a safety policy and a safety personnel. 4. No retaliatory action should be meted out against a worker who expressed dissatisfaction about the unsafe working conditions or even who refused work on safety ground. These Laws and more are very effective, as Nigeria labour Law contains all these. So workers in Nigeria have been short-changed for long. It is time to know your right and speak up. Be Responsible!!!
