Can You Give Eight Minutes?

Since the beginning of the year, global trackers, including data from the World Health Organization, estimate that between 95,000 and 104,000 people around the world have died by suicide. Note that we are just a month in, tens of thousands of lives, each one carrying dreams, memories, laughter, and stories that ended far too soon.

But suicide is never just a number. It is an empty chair at the table, a phone that will never ring again, messages left unread, and families and friends left wondering what they missed or what they could have done differently. Many of those who struggle do so quietly, smiling in public while fighting battles no one else sees.

In a world that moves quickly, it’s easy to assume people are fine because they seem fine. Yet sometimes, all someone needs is to feel seen, heard, and remembered. A simple check-in can interrupt a moment of despair. A small act of care can remind someone they are not alone.

So pause for a moment today. Think about the people in your life. The friend who has been unusually quiet. The one who always says they’re “fine.” The one who carries everyone else’s burdens but rarely shares their own.

Call that friend, ask them how they are— it only takes eight minutes and a phone call, and a life can be saved.
