BUNCH OF CRUEL PEOPLE
Listen to this Insight
Social media can be a cruel place. Especially when its users believe they're doing something nice, but truly are not. By now I believe we're aware of the viral video/TikTok sound - let's call it the 'bunch of women' sound. On a slow day, you should come across four versions of that sound online. We like to call it cruise. And it doesn't end there, someone or some persons took it upon themselves to find the woman and interview her. These persons believed they were giving her a form of recognition. Making her the next social media 'success' story. The question I have however, is this - what is this recognition for? The woman in that viral video was speaking about a terrible experience. It was her expressing the pain she felt about a situation. And that pain was made into a viral video used for comedic purposes. Now some individuals feel like she should be the next big thing on social media. Some people are of the notion that it is her time to experience 'grace' through the social media. Some are beginning to ask that she opens social media accounts, for more recognition. This isn't the first time someone's unpleasant situation would be turned into something viral on social media. If you can remember the case of a man nicknamed 'Mr spell'. A man who needed genuine help, was rather put on comedy shows to entertain people. That was his own 'grace'. Months later, he was back in the street, worse than before. People may argue that cash gifts are presented to this people, and that's what matters. But remember, cash isn't limitless. If there's no significant help given to those who need it, they'd be left in a worse situation after the cash is exhausted. To want the feeling that comes with doing good is different from actually doing good. Making jokes with people's terrible experiences, under the guise of social media recognition, is just cruel. The woman in that video, may start to believe that things are actually looking up for her. But what happens when the next trend relegates her to the background? I'd compare the situation to a prisoner who is granted freedom for 24 hours, and then is taken back into jail unexpectedly. And I know we like to come up with the excuse of 'cruise', but cruise doesn't need to be so cruel.
