Are the Constant Accidents on the Kugbo Express back?

Just this week two accidents happened within two days at the Kugbo Expressway, Abuja on the 19th and 20th of March 2025, the incident claimed the life of more than 20 people in a gas tank explosion that erupted and engulfed cars during the closing rush hour of 6 - 7 pm

The fire started due to a CNG( Compressed Natural Gas) tanker that lost control just before the Karu bridge between Kugbo and Nyanya, the truck exploded, trapping other motorists and burning them to ash. It was a gruesome sight as witnesses shared the horrid sights that evening.

A nurse who had closed from work and was heading home said, ‘There were body parts scattered on the road we had to tiptoe to pass the accident scene.’

The Federal Fire Service, The Nigerian Police, And The National Emergency Management Agency arrived a few moments later to put out the fire and help with casualties as good samaritans tried to help, cars close to the tanker at the time of the explosion were burnt with people inside them.

The next day after the fatal accident another tanker fell on the same spot at 2 - 3 pm killing at least two people. The Nigerian Road Safety immediately swung into action to curb the long queue of traffic.

The incident left families in disarray, and the president and minister have yet to address the incident. The Kugbo Express has claimed lives over the years; in 2009 eight persons were killed in a fatal truck brake failure, and in 2011 twenty people were killed when two heavy-duty trucks lost brakes and crushed several vehicles, the list goes on.
