Amber and sunshine

To see you fall from grace was to watch an Icarus made of tenderness lose her sky. Your amber eyes once held a calm that moved through me like a quiet tide, and your honey beige skin glowed with a warmth I could never look away from. There was always a hue of you that coloured my days, a light so gentle I believed I could never escape.

I think of the small details you never knew I held close. The piercings you hid from your parents, the music that shaped your moods, the shifting tones of your lipstick. You drowned me in the hidden places of your heart, then left me stranded in the same depths you once invited me into.

You once asked me if I hated you, and I almost told you everything. The truth pressed against my mouth, heavy and restless, the truth that I loved you more than caution allowed. I swallowed it, believing you were gentler than the wound you would later leave.

I still struggle to believe you were capable of it. I thought you the world, and watching you fall from grace felt unreal. like a sky turning against its own light. I carry no grudge, but I keep asking myself how to live as if there is not another version of me carved in your shape.

                                                                               -Ehi💕
