A TIME TO LOOK AWAY
It's been days or almost two weeks since the news of Burna Boy and the shooting incident at cubana club. But there's nothing seemingly being done about it. I fear that it would eventually fizzle out, and Burna boy, if guilty, would get to walk away. Now I am not saying for a fact that he is guilty, but the allegations are pretty solid. And I expected some form of investigation, and truth finding. It's rather being treated as hearsey. What's more confusing, is the silence online. I thought we were all tired of a faulty legal system, where justice is being constantly denied? Where are the hashtags? Where are the usual 'my heart bleeds' sermons from our concerned celebrities? Speaking of celebrities, are they quiet because this is an issue involving a colleague? Is this some sort of unwritten industry code? I have never actually been moved by the activism of celebrities. To me, most of them are merely using the opportunity to score points with the people, boost popularity, and endear themselves to us. Isn't it quite ironic that the same Burna boy, who made a song about the events of the end sars, would use the same police force to intimidate people. Another disturbing thing, is the passionate defense from his fans. These same people are almost everywhere on the internet airing displeasure at the country and it's short comings. I begin to wonder, are we supposed to only react whenever a politician is involved? Is that the only time we ought to demand justice? If so, why didn't I get the memo? I almost never complain about the Nigerian government, because I believe that the actual problem lies with us - the people. And I hate that I'm constantly being proven right. We cannot continue with 'selective activism'. Or are these complaints from a place of jealousy? Are we angry that we do not have the opportunity and impetuous to do whatsoever we like and get away with it. Do we as Nigerians really want a working country, or a country that works in our favor, allowing us to do as we please? It is time we reevaluate our clamour for a change. From where I stand, I see people waiting for their turn to thrive on a flawed system.
